Horn of Africa Famine
Somalia has been hit with severe droughts and famines in the past, but due to a lack of proper rainfall over the past three seasons, this poor country today is facing one of the worst famines in its history.
Somalia’s lack of water and sanitation has been spreading to neighboring countries, Kenya and Ethiopia, who are also experiencing similar problems. According to UNICEF, 1 in 6 children under the age of five are dying in Somalia, due to famine-related diseases and problems.
A lack of clean water and sanitation has also lead to a drastic increase in cholera and typhoid in these areas. According to the World Health Organization, this is the worst regional drought in over 60 years.
